As the year-end holiday season approaches, many people wonder how to maintain healthy hair while travelling. Here are some common questions and answers to help you keep your hair in great condition on the go.

Why is my hair falling out during travel?

Travelling itself shouldn’t cause increased hair loss. If you notice more hair falling out while you’re on the move, it could be due to an event that occurred three months earlier, such as an illness, significant weight loss, or severe stress. This condition is known as telogen* effluvium, where a temporary shift occurs in the percentage of hairs in the terminal phase of their life cycle.

Telogen hairs, which have a lifespan of about 100 days, naturally fall out, and this increased shedding is usually temporary.

Can the sun damage my hair?

Yes, excessive sun exposure can damage your hair just as it can harm your skin. Ultraviolet (UV) light can alter the hair’s chemical bonds, increasing the risk of breakage and damage. Sun exposure can also cause your hair to lose its lustre and shine. To protect your hair, try to avoid prolonged sun exposure and wear a hat if necessary.

Does local water affect my hair?

In some locations, hard water contains higher levels of calcium and magnesium ions, which can make it harder to create a good lather when you shampoo and rinse your hair.

Calcium carbonate in hard water can react with soap to create deposits, leading to drier hair. Hotel soaps and shampoos may also not be of the best quality or what you are accustomed to using. Using a conditioner after shampooing can help prevent excessive dryness. If needed, bring your own shampoo and conditioner from home.

What shampoos and conditioners are good for my hair?

The natural pH level of human hair and skin is slightly acidic, around 5.5. This acidity helps prevent bacterial and fungal infections of the scalp. Using soap or shampoo that is too alkaline can result in excessively dry hair. For regular use, select shampoos with a pH balance of 5.5

By following these tips, you can keep your hair healthy and vibrant while enjoying your travels.
