Laser hair removal can liberate you from the ongoing cycle of plucking, waxing, and shaving. Dr Tan Hiok Hee of Thomson Specialist Skin Centre explains more about laser therapy and available hair removal treatments in Singapore.

Why are some people more hairy than others?

Body hair is normal and helps regulate our temperature. However, some people are hairier than others, often due to higher levels of androgenic hair. Other factors include hormone imbalances, genetics, pregnancy, or menopause. Usually, there is no underlying medical cause, though in rare cases, it may be due to medications. If excess body hair concerns you, consider laser hair removal in Singapore. Speak to us to find out more.

What hair removal methods are available in Singapore?

There are many types of hair removal treatments in Singapore, ranging from traditional methods like waxing to more advanced options such as laser hair removal.

Temporary methods

  • Shaving
  • Waxing
  • Depilatory Creams
  • Plucking

These methods do not affect the hair follicles and roots, so the hair will grow back. While these methods work for many, frequent shaving or plucking can irritate the skin.

Permanent methods

Permanent hair removal targets and destroys hair follicles and roots. At Thomson Specialist Skin Centre, we use the Gentlemax laser system. This system employs an intense light source (long-pulsed Nd-Yag 1064nm) to selectively heat and destroy hair follicles. The laser energy is absorbed by the pigment in the follicle, and the generated heat 'burns' the follicle without significantly injuring surrounding tissues.

The Gentlemax laser features an epidermal cooling system that allows higher energy levels to be used safely in darker skin types, reducing pain and discomfort.

At Thomson Specialist Skin Centre, our laser hair removal offers long-lasting results, freeing you from a lifetime of waxing, shaving, and plucking.

What can laser hair removal treatments do (and not do)?

Laser hair removal can:

  • Selectively destroy hair follicles.
  • Achieve long-term hair reduction after multiple sessions.
  • Cause minor side effects such as swelling and pigmentation, particularly in patients with darker skin.

Laser hair removal cannot:

  • Achieve permanent hair destruction after a single treatment.
  • Work equally well for all patients; those with dark hair and fair skin respond best.
  • Remove white hairs.

While laser hair removal helps achieve long-term hair reduction, multiple sessions are necessary for significant results.

How should I prepare for laser hair removal treatment?

To prepare for laser hair removal:

  • Avoid waxing and plucking hairs two weeks before treatment.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure four weeks before treatment.
  • Shave the treatment area three to five days before your appointment.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of herpes; antiviral medications may be prescribed if treating areas like the lips and bikini line.

How to care for my skin after laser hair removal?

  • Continue practising sun protection by applying adequate sunscreen and avoiding excessive sun exposure.
  • Diligently apply emollients prescribed by your doctor to soothe the skin.

Will I notice a difference after one laser session?

Patience is key, as multiple sessions are needed for significant hair reduction. The number of sessions required depends on the treatment area. Treated areas may not be completely hairless, but remaining hairs will likely be lighter and finer. There is a small risk of pigmentation after treatment, which usually resolves with proper sun protection. Expect to see a 20% reduction in hair growth four to six weeks after each treatment.

No more taxing waxing

Laser hair removal is an investment worth considering if excess hair affects your body confidence or if frequent waxing at salon is costly and time-consuming. Once deemed a suitable candidate, the way forward should be smooth—just like your legs, armpits, and bikini line after treatment.
