Eczema: A Common Challenge for Singaporean Children

In Singapore, about one in five children suffer from eczema. This prevalent skin condition can significantly impact a child's quality of life, causing discomfort, sleep disturbances, and emotional distress. Beyond the physical symptoms, eczema can also affect a child's self-esteem, social interactions, and overall well-being. Many parents seek alternative approaches to manage their child's eczema alongside or instead of conventional treatments.

In this article, we'll share the story of Adam*, a young boy who struggled with eczema for 5 years before finding relief through Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). His journey highlights the potential of TCM in addressing the complex challenges of childhood eczema.

Meet Adam

A bright and energetic 12-year-old boy who loves ice cream, fried treats, and all things sweet. Unfortunately, his affinity for these foods has triggered persistent eczema for the past five years. Adam's eczema primarily manifests as bumpy red rashes on the back of both legs, often accompanied by hyperpigmentation, scratch marks, and relentless itchiness. Simple activities like school activities became increasingly challenging as fatigue and improper diet exacerbated his condition. Adam's mother tried various medications; however, they were only able to provide temporary relief.

Adam's journey toward healing began with a month-long treatment regimen combining acupuncture and herbal medicine under the guidance of Thomson Chinese Medicine’s physician.

The TCM Approach to Healing

In TCM, eczema is understood not merely as a skin condition, but as a symptom of deeper imbalances within the body. Factors like “Wind-heat” and “Dampness” are often cited as root causes, exacerbated by internal heat levels that are naturally higher in children. Triggers such as hot weather and fever can further disturb these imbalances, leading to eczema flare-ups.

The Healing Path with Herbal Medicine

In TCM, herbal remedies are tailored to address specific patterns of eczema. For children like Adam, herbs such as Wu Ling San (五苓散) are prescribed to effectively drain excess dampness from the body. Additionally, Chi Xiao Dou (赤小豆) is utilised to clear excess heat, which can exacerbate inflammation and itching. Moreover, Chan Tui (蝉蜕) is added to soothe itchiness, providing relief from the discomfort associated with eczema flare-ups.

It's important to note that TCM herbal remedies are tailored to address the unique characteristics of each individual's eczema. TCM practitioners carefully consider factors like the appearance of the rash, the nature of the itch, and the patient's overall health to create a personalised herbal remedy. By targeting these underlying imbalances, TCM herbs not only alleviate current symptoms but also aim to prevent future flare-ups, promoting sustained skin health and overall well-being for children dealing with eczema.

Fine Needles, Powerful Healing

The acupuncture sessions were surprisingly gentle. Initially wary of acupuncture because of the needles, both Adam and his mother were relieved to find the process largely painless. Adam diligently completed a total of three sessions. Thin needles are strategically inserted into specific acupoints to regulate Qi flow and rectify imbalances within the body. For Adam, acupuncture points on the back of his knee, lower legs and ankles targeting Bladder and Spleen meridians were selected. This therapeutic approach not only alleviates itching and inflammation but also fortifies the immune system against recurrent eczema flare-ups. By enhancing overall well-being and fortifying the skin's natural barrier, acupuncture offers holistic benefits that are particularly advantageous for managing eczema.

A Notable Transformation

The results of this comprehensive approach were evident after just three acupuncture sessions. Adam’s mother observed a significant improvement: "The rashes became less bumpy and no longer so itchy." This initial success was a promising sign of the treatment's effectiveness, reflecting the potential for TCM to provide meaningful relief from eczema symptoms.

Embracing the Emotional Journey

Managing eczema often requires patience and perseverance. For children like Adam, the emotional impact of eczema may become significant, affecting their confidence and comfort. It’s crucial to support them emotionally, maintain a positive outlook, and integrate consistent skincare routines, environmental adjustments, and stress management techniques.

TCM Holistic Insights into Children's Eczema

TCM and Western medicine can both be effective options for treating eczema, and they can be used in conjunction. While Western medications and steroid creams are viable choices for managing symptoms, TCM provides an alternative approach through methods like herbs, acupuncture and dietary adjustments. TCM focuses on addressing underlying imbalances to restore harmony within the body, offering a natural solution that complements conventional treatments and helps prevent future flare-ups.

Adam’s story is a testament to the potential of TCM to provide relief and restore balance. By combining acupuncture, herbal medicine, and holistic self-care, families can navigate the challenges of eczema and enhance their quality of life. This approach not only alleviates symptoms but also fosters a deeper sense of well-being and resilience.
