Preparing for your MRI scan
- Before the scan, you will be asked to change into a hospital gown and remove any metal objects (jewellery, hearing aids, hair pins, etc.)
- MRI staff will go through a Safety Screening Checklist with you to ensure that you are safe to enter the MRI scan room.
- During the scan, you will lie on a cushioned table which enters the MRI machine. The machine is a small tunnel that is open on both ends.
- As the MRI machine makes loud noises, you will be given earplugs and/or headphones to block the sounds.
- It's important to remain as still as possible during the scan to prevent blurry images.
- Depending on the type of scan required, you may be asked to hold your breath briefly.
- The scan usually lasts between 30 minutes to an hour.
- In some cases, a contrast agent (a special dye) may be injected into a vein to enhance the images.
- You can resume your daily activities after the scan.
