Dr Ryan Lee is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at <a href="Thomson Specialists" target="_self">Thomson Specialists</a> Woodleigh.Dr Lee graduated with an intercalated bachelor of medical science degree (Honours) at Imperial College London and obtained MBBS (Distinction) in Medical Sciences, Clinical Science, and Clinical Practice at St Bartholomews and the Royal London, University of London. He further obtained a Masters of Medicine (O&amp;G) and was conferred a member of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (MRCOG). Subsequently, he graduated from the Clinician-Scientist residency and became a fully qualified Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with the Specialist Accreditation Board of the Ministry of Health, Singapore.Dr Ryan’s practice encompasses general gynaecology, high-risk obstetrics with a special interest in maternal medicine. He advocates a holistic approach to the care of pregnant mothers through optimisation of medical conditions in pregnancy. He is also the co-lead for the SingHealth Maternal Medicine Network to promote joint collaborations among various medical sub-specialties for multi-disciplinary care. Dr Ryan received several service awards including the Singhealth Silver Quality award twice, ‘Service from the Heart’ award, ‘COVID Team Award', and 'Resilience Medal’ for excellent clinical service rendered in patient care.His main research interests focus on interventional lifestyle changes in improving obstetric outcomes in women with gestational diabetes and enhancing pregnancy outcomes. He is an Integrated Platform for Research in Advancing Metabolic Health Outcomes in Women and Children (IPRAMHO) investigator to develop excellent models of metabolic care. He was previously awarded the NMRC health research scholarship, graduating with a Masters of Clinical Investigation from the National University of Singapore. He was also awarded the Duke-NUS academic medical grant and National Medical Research Council New Investigator Grant (NIG) studying the ‘Functional roles of plasma micronutrients in obese women receiving nutrition intervention during preconception and early pregnancy. He presented at numerous international conferences and published numerous papers in reputable peer-reviewed journals.Besides research, Dr Ryan has an incessant passion for teaching and was previously awarded the Inspiring Resident-Educator award. He was appointed as a SingHealth residency physician facilitator and Duke-NUS Clinical assistant professor where he receives commendable accolades from students. Dr Ryan Lee Wai Kheong

Dr Jerry Chen is a Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Medical Director at Alps Orthopaedic Centre.Dr Chen specialises in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), hip and knee conditions, joint replacement and preservation surgery, sports injuries, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, and trauma fractures of the upper and lower limbs.Dr Chen graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. He was subsequently accepted into the highly competitive Orthopaedic Surgery specialist training programme at SingHealth, earning the Best Resident Award. In 2018, he received his Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh). He constantly seeks different learning opportunities. On his own initiative, he has completed several overseas trainings in countries such as China, Switzerland, Germany, and the United Kingdom, where he trained and worked with internationally renowned surgeons.Before entering private practice, Dr Chen was a Consultant at Singapore General Hospital (SGH) with over 13 years of experience. He led the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) workgroup for hip and knee replacement surgery and served as the lead for total hip replacement for SGH’s Value-Driven Care (VDC) workgroup. Dr Chen has performed over 500 surgeries annually and has been instrumental in improving patient outcomes, reducing the average hospitalisation stay for hip and knee replacement surgeries from 4 days to 18 hours.Dr Chen is actively involved in teaching as a Clinical Associate Professor at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and a core faculty member for SingHealth’s Orthopaedic Surgery residency training. He has received numerous awards, including the Inspiring Resident Educator Award in 2018. He is a recognised speaker at local and international conferences, has published over 100 scientific papers and book chapters, and has secured more than a million dollars in research grants. Dr Chen also participates in research programmes focused on improving patient treatment outcomes in areas such as keyhole shoulder surgery and foot &amp; ankle surgeries.Dr Chen is accredited to perform surgical procedures at Thomson Medical Centre.

Dr Jerry Chen

Dr Tan Sok Chuen is an Orthopaedic Surgery Specialist at Hip &amp; Knee Orthopaedics, and a Visiting Consultant at Thomson Surgical Centre.Dr Tan's subspeciality is in hip and knee surgery, including joint replacement and revision surgeries. She also focuses on minimally invasive joint replacement surgery and osteoporosis treatment.Dr Tan graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2004. She completed her Orthopaedic Seamless Training programme across all tertiary institutions in Singapore (SGH and NUH) and was conferred the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. She completed clinical fellowships in Hip &amp; Knee Surgery at Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford, UK in 2016, and London Health Sciences Centre, Ontario, Canada in 2015. The Nuffield Centre is renowned for partial knee replacements, and the London Health Sciences Centre is one of the most famous joint revision centres in North America, thus giving her wide exposure to joint replacement surgeries.Before joining The Orthopaedic Centre, Dr Tan was a Consultant in Orthopaedic Surgery at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, where she was one of the highest volume surgeons.Dr Tan is an Adjunct Assistant Professor involved in medical undergraduate teaching. She has published extensively on hip and knee arthroplasty and has presented at numerous scientific meetings. Her publications on trunnionosis in hip replacements are frequently quoted in indexed journals.Dr Tan is the first woman hip and knee replacement surgeon in Singapore. Being also a mother of an active toddler, she understands the demands of the modern working mother and the need for mobility and minimum down-time. She believes that all women should be able to age gracefully and have quality of life even in old age. Thus her interest in minimally-invasive joint replacement surgery and osteoporosis treatment.Dr Tan is accredited to perform surgical procedures at Thomson Medical Centre and Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital.

Dr Tan Sok Chuen

Dr Woo is a cardiologist with a subspecialty interest in multimodality cardiac imaging at Sunrise Heart and Internal Medicine Clinic, in Sembawang. He is experienced in using various cardiac imaging techniques to come up with accurate cardiac diagnoses for further management and treatment.Dr Woo is formally trained in Cardiac CT in the prestigious John's Hopkins Hospital in the US and Harefield Hospital in the UK. He completed his cardiac MRI fellowship with world renowned Berlin Heart Centre in Germany. During the course of his sub-specialty training, he had attained diplomates in adult echocardiography, cardiac CT and cardiac MRI. As such, he is experienced and competent in conducting and reporting echocardiograms, stress echocardiograms, cardiac CTs, cardiac MRIs and stress cardiac MRIs. He has also published and reviewed in several medical journals and has been invited to speak at several international conferences.When he is not taking pictures of the human heart out of work hours, Dr Woo takes pictures and videos of nature and wildlife as his hobby.Dr Woo Jia Wei is accredited to Thomson Medical Centre, Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, and Mount Alvernia Hospital.

Dr Woo Jia Wei

Dr Beh is a Senior Consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist running his practice in Thomson Medical Centre since 2004. He graduated in 1987 and obtained his specialist membership from The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (UK) in 1993.&nbsp; His special interest is in minimally invasive surgery and reproductive surgery and he received his further training in leading centres in the USA. He is actively involved in the development, training, and teaching of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in Singapore and remains a visiting consultant in the MIS unit at KK Women's and Children's Hospital and the O&amp;G Department of Singapore General Hospital.A firm believer in continuous medical education, he has helped to organize numerous scientific meetings and taken part in many local and overseas congresses and workshops.&nbsp; He is actively involved in matters pertaining to O&amp;G and was the past President of the O&amp;G Society of Singapore 2007-2009. He is also a member of the Congress Trust Fund of the Society since 2018.

Dr Beh Suan Tiong

Dr Jessie Phoon graduated from the University of Auckland in 2005 and subsequently pursued a post graduate degree in obstetrics and gynaecology. She was conferred membership by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists(UK) and Master of Medicine(Singapore) in 2011.Dr Phoon is a MOH accredited IVF specialist and is fully qualified to perform the full spectrum of assisted reproductive techniques(ART). She had the privilege to further pursue her interest in fine-tuning In-Vitro Maturation(IVM) into routine IVF and fertility preservation in Karolinska Institute, Sweden under the MOH – Health Manpower Development Programme(HMDP). In the last years of clinical practice as a senior consultant in KK Women’s &amp; Children’s Hospital, she helmed the directorship of KKIVF Centre &amp; National Sperm Bank (2020-2023). She also co-founded the OncoFertility Clinic (OFC), which is the first co-joint gynaeoncology and fertility clinic in Singapore.Apart from performing general obstetrics &amp; gynaecology, Dr Phoon is also fully proficient and accredited in performing minimally invasive surgeries/ laparoscopic surgeries as she believes in its quick recovery rate with less pain.Dr Phoon’s interest also expanded to clinical research. She received the Singhealth Duke-NUS Academic Medicine Research grant in 2020 for a multi-centre randomized controlled trial in comparing conservative treatment for atypical endometrial hyperplasia. Besides clinical work, Dr Phoon was heavily involved in teaching the undergraduate and postgraduate students. She was appointed as Associate Program Director for Singhealth Obstetrics &amp; Gynaecology residency program from 2016 to 2020 and continued to be a core faculty of the residency program thereafter. She strongly believes that imparting knowledge &amp; experience is crucial as these should be shared amongst everyone.As a passionate clinician, she believes in developing strong relationships with her patients, providing them individualised care, and ensuring they feel heard and supported throughout their healthcare journey. She also strives to improve and empower women to make informed decisions about their reproductive well-being.

Dr Jessie Phoon Wai Leng

Dr Khoo Chong Kiat is a Senior Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. He operates his own private practice, CK KHOO Clinic for Women &amp; Laparoscopy. Prior to this, he had served 20 years of public service, with the Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Unit at KK Women’s &amp; Children’s Hospital, Singapore. Recognised for his exceptional patient care, Dr Khoo received several Gold Service Stars awards during his 20-year tenure at KK Hospital.Dr Khoo did his HMDP Fellowship in Endometriosis &amp; Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) under the mentorship of renowned Professor Michel Canis in Clermont-Ferrand, France in 2010. He holds the European University Diploma of Gynaecologic Operative Endoscopy, awarded from CHU- Clermont Ferrand. Upon return, he helped to set up the KK Endometriosis Centre in 2011.Dr Khoo has also often been invited as a teaching faculty and international speaker at various MIS conferences around the world, eg, APAGE, AAGL, ESGE, and ISGE over the years. His favourite topics include laparoscopic myomectomies, cystectomies, hysterectomies, contained in-bag fibroid morcellation, and ectopic pregnancies. He was involved in the teaching and training of KK MIS overseas fellows from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Germany. Given his extensive Asia Pacific MIS networking links, he is currently serving as the Vice Secretary-General of APAGE.As for his academic contributions, Dr Khoo was appointed Adjunct Assistant Professorships in all three of Singapore's medical schools: YLL-NUS School of Medicine, DUKE-NUS Medical School, and the newly established LKC-NTU School of Medicine. He was also the inaugural Core Faculty member of the SingHealth ACP O&amp;G Residency Programme, training the future generations of O&amp;G specialists. In 2016, Dr Khoo won a Macy scholarship as a clinician-educator at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. As his contributions to local O&amp;G professional bodies, Dr Khoo served previously as the Treasurer and Honorary Secretary of the College of O&amp;G, Singapore. He was also the Section Head of Gynae-Endoscopy (2018-2020). He is currently a lifetime member in the O&amp;G Society of Singapore. Dr Khoo is also a certified colposcopist with the Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology of Singapore. Besides being an internationally renowned MIS gynaecologist, Dr Khoo was also one of the busiest obstetrician in the largest public hospital in Singapore before leaving for private practice. Dr Khoo is accredited to perform surgical procedures at Thomson Medical Centre and Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital.

Dr Khoo Chong Kiat

Dr Koh Cheng Huat is an experienced Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, at C.H. Koh Clinic For Women, located in Toa Payoh. He has a special interest in Gynaecology Oncology. He has wide experience in oncological surgeries especially in minimal invasive operations on women's cancers for more than 20 years. He also performed complex minimal invasive surgeries on complicated gynecological cases e.g. severe endometriosis, etc.

Dr Koh Cheng Huat

Dr Marco Faria Correa is a Brazilian Surgeon who specialises in General Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Microsurgery and Robotic Surgery and practices between Singapore &amp; Brazil. In 1991, Dr Marco’s research projects in adapting endoscopic methods to the subcutaneous led him to be the worldwide introducer in Endoscopy Plastic Surgery. This special technique in Endoscopy Abdominoplasty won him many international awards and prizes, and he was invited to many International conferences to share his special technique. One of the many big international awards was the Walter Scoot Brown’s Award in 1996 by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Being a globetrotter sharing his knowledge in the advancements in Plastic Surgery, Singapore which was opening its doors to international talents, attracted Dr Marco in many positive aspects that he shifted his main practice to Singapore. With his 25 years of experience in endoscopic plastic surgery, in 2014, he decided to bring the endoscopic methods to the next level by using the aid of the robotic da Vinci® surgery system. Dr Marco underwent his robotic training journey. In 2015, he performed his inaugural Robotic Surgery in the repair of the muscle aponeurotic rectus plication with the aid of the da Vini surgical system. He has been advocating the importance of the core muscles playing an important role in our daily activities and physiological functions and how rectus diastasis can affect our core muscles' function &amp; how rectus diastasis can affect our core muscle’s function. Besides presenting at many international conferences, he is a frequent contributor to different textbook publications. Dr Marco also conducts international workshops on Abdominal Wall Robotics Workshop in Singapore &amp; Brazil &amp; is a member of the Robotic Surgery Society of Singapore. Dr Marco is also an active member &amp; frequent present at the Asia Pacific Hernia Society.

Dr Marco Faria Correa

Dr Ng is a specialist in&nbsp;Obstetrics&nbsp;and&nbsp;Gynaecology,&nbsp;with special interest in minimally invasive surgery, especially in the application of single incision gynaecological laparoscopy. He graduated from the medical faculty, National University of Singapore (MMed) and holds a Diploma in advanced laparoscopy (Dip. Eur Gyn Endoscopy) from the renowned CHU Estaing laparoscopic centre, France. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetrician &amp; Gynaecologist as well as the vice-president of Obstetrical &amp; Gynaecological Society of Singapore (OGSS).&nbsp; He believes in holistic care for his patients and has vast experiences in performing surgeries and deliveries. Alongside his compassionate patient-centred care approach, Dr Ng is passionate about offering the best surgical solutions for management of gynaecological conditions. Dr Ng is one of the pioneers in Singapore to develop the application of single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) in gynaecology since 2009. He has since then performed more than 1000 SILS surgeries successfully for gynaecological conditions such as fibroids,&nbsp;endometriosis&nbsp;and fertility regulation for family planning. Previously, he performed the first case of Single Site Robotic Surgery in Singapore (SSRS). Dr Ng is committed to providing&nbsp;obstetric care&nbsp;for all expectant mothers and advocates for natural delivery. He is an activist in promoting women’s health and as such, he enjoys organising public outreach programs to empower women in making informed decisions about their healthcare.

Dr Ng Ying Woo

Dr Quek Swee Chong is a specialist in Obstetrics &amp; Gynaecology at the ASC Clinic. His special interest is in the area of prevention of gynaecological cancers, particularly cancer of the cervix.He was formerly Senior Consultant &amp; Head, Pre-invasive Disease &amp; Screening Unit, Department of Gynaecological Oncology, KK Women’s &amp; Children’s Hospital. He served on the board of the International Federation of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology and was former president of the Society of Colposcopy &amp; Cervical Pathology of Singapore. He is also an honorary member of the Portuguese Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, as well as the Philippines Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology.He received his undergraduate medical training in Dublin, Ireland, before working as an Obstetrician &amp; Gynaecologist in London, UK for several years, including 3 years as a clinical research fellow. He has worked in Singapore since 2000.Dr Quek has a passion for teaching and training doctors and healthcare workers in underprivileged areas and has worked with the International Agency for Research into Cancer (IARC, WHO) in the area of training healthcare workers. He has authored several books and book chapters including “Lower Genital Tract Precancer 2ed“ (Blackwell Science) and “Cervical and lower genital tract Precancer 3ed”.His research work includes real-time detection of cervical cancer and precancer, pap smear screening, HPV testing, and was involved in the clinical trials for HPV vaccines for the prevention of cervical cancer.He has lectured extensively, both regionally and internationally in the area of cervical cancer prevention and conducts several training colposcopy courses a year.Dr Quek has run the Himalayan Women’s Health Project, a voluntary non-profit humanitarian screening and treatment initiative since 2009. Dr Suresh Nair is an obstetrician and gynaecologist. Aside from general obstetrics and gynecology, his areas of subspecialities are reproductive endocrinology, infertility and assisted reproductive techniques (eg: IVF, ICSI, IUI) minimal access endoscopic surgery, and advanced robot-assisted reproductive surgeries. In 1991, Dr Nair obtained a training grant from the Singapore Government called the “Health Manpower Development Programme” (HMDP) where he spent two years training in endoscopic surgery from 1991 to 1993 in the United States, United Kingdom, France, and Germany. He completed the SGH Robotic-assisted Laparoscopic Surgery Training Course in October &amp; November 2004 at the Singapore General Hospital. Prior to founding O&amp;G The Women’s Medical Specialist, he was the Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. He co-authored the book “Practical O&amp;G Handbook for the Clinician and General Practitioner” which won the British Medical Association Book Award in 2015. Dr Adelina Wong is a consultant obstetrician and gynecologist. She completed her MBBS at the National University of Singapore in 1992, and MRCOG at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, London, in 1997. Dr Adrian Ooi is a specialist in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. He graduated with distinction from medical school in London, UK, and completed rigorous plastic surgery training at the Singapore General Hospital. He then pursed further super-specialized fellowship training in aesthetic surgery at the Wellington Hospital, London, UK, and reconstructive surgery at the University of Chicago, USA. Dr Audrey Looi trained in Oculoplastics at the Singapore National Eye Centre. She completed her fellowships in Oculoplastic, Orbital and Ocular Pathology at the University of British Columbia under the supervision of Prof Peter Dolman, Prof Jack Rootman and Prof Valerie White respectively, returning to Singapore in 2004 with a Best Fellow research prize.Dr Looi served as Head of the Oculoplastic Service as well as Clinical Director of the General Eye Clinic at the Singapore National Eye Centre from 2007 to 2016 and 2009 to 2019 respectively. She was appointed Adjunct Associate Professor at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School from 2012 to 2019. Dr Looi is currently the Medical Director of Ava Eye Clinic. Dr Looi served as an examiner with the Royal College of Ophthalmology (Edinburgh) and the National University of Singapore. She was elected Treasurer of the Asia-Pacific Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery from 2006 to 2010 and Vice-President of the Society from 2012-2014. She served as Editor of the society's newsletter, iPlastic from 2013 to 2018 and was re-elected First Vice-President of the society in December 2018. She is the First Vice-President of the Singapore Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr Audrey Looi

Dr Benjamin Yip graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) with a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS). He was then conferred as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians, United Kingdom (UK). Thereafter, he completed his specialist training in General Medicine as well as his advanced specialist training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the National University Hospital, Singapore. Dr Yip was awarded with the Health Manpower Development Plan award to sub-specialise in Advanced Endoscopy at the Royal Free and University College Hospitals in London, UK. During his tenure, he trained with several leading members of the Advanced Endoscopy community. He also received training in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), Spyglass™ cholangioscopy, deep enteroscopy and enteral dilation/stenting. Prior to his private practice, Dr Yip served in the public sector for almost two decades. He was appointed as a Consultant at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) as well as Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH). In addition, he is currently a Visiting Consultant Gastroenterologist at NTFGH. In recognition of his significant professional contributions to the field of Gastroenterology/Hepatology, Dr Yip was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore, as well as the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh, UK). Dr Benjamin Yip’s most recent accolade was the prestigious fellowship designation awarded to him by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE). As a well-experienced Liver specialist and Gastroenterologist in Singapore, he was recognised for his contributions not only in clinical endoscopy but in endoscopy-related leadership, education and research as well. He is one of the very few Gastroenterologists in Singapore to be awarded this fellowship.

Dr Chan graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree in 1981 and obtained her Masters of Medicine (Paediatrics), Singapore in 1986. She was conferred a Doctor of Medicine degree by National University of Singapore for her thesis on Cardiac Dysrhythmias in Children in 1996. Her extensive research on Paediatric Cardiology has been published widely in a number of local and international medical journals. Breast lumps during pregnancy are very common. The expectant mother will experience many normal physiological changes ― an increase in breast size, more obvious sweat glands around the nipples, a darkening of the areola ― all of which will prepare her body for breastfeeding.Common non-cancerous variations to breasts include hormonal changes (fibrocystic changes), fibroadenomas, cysts, lipomas, accessory (extra) breast tissue. Pregnancy-related breast cancers make up about 3 per cent of all breast cancers.Whenever a pregnant woman feels a lump, she should see a doctor to get their opinion, keeping in mind that most times it will turn out to be nothing serious!<h2>What the doctor will do</h2>When you see the doctor, she will ask details as to how you detected the lump, how long it has been present and if you have detected any changes, so as to get an idea what the lump is likely to be.Next, the doctor will conduct a breast examination to confirm the presence of the lump, and check for any other symptoms such as skin changes or nipple discharge.Most patients will then be recommended to get an ultrasound scan ― this will give additional information as to whether this lump is benign or cancerous. If there is any concern that the lump may be cancerous, your doctor will advise you as to the pros and cons of having a biopsy, which can be done safely even during pregnancy.“If a pregnant women detects a lump, I would advise them to have a thorough consultation and a physical examination, followed by an ultrasound. If necessary, I would then perform a biopsy.”<h2>Breast cancer screening during pregnancy</h2>A screening checks for cancer even when a patient is feeling well and has absolutely no cancer signs or symptoms. For breast cancer screening, most countries, including Singapore, recommend mammogram screening from age 50 onwards. For women who are at higher risk, this may start at 40. Some specialists will recommend a supplementary ultrasound as well.If a pregnant women detects a lump, I would advise them to have a thorough consultation and a physical examination, followed by an ultrasound. If necessary, I would then perform a biopsy.<h2>Screening methods (Mammograms/Ultrasound)</h2>Ultrasound, the same technology used to monitor the baby during pregnancy, is safe and useful in detecting lumps, and to check if it’s solid or cystic. Most specialists do not use ultrasound as a screening method as the majority of such lumps it detects are not cancerous.A diagnostic ultrasound can still be performed safely on pregnant women to assess their breast lump. If a subsequent biopsy confirms a cancer, she may then need a baseline mammogram, after discussing the pros and cons with her doctor. This is because early stage breast cancer may not form a lump yet, but may attract calcium spots, which can be detected using a mammogram. An abdominal lead apron may be used to reduce the baby’s exposure to radiation.<h2>Breast cancer treatment</h2>If the biopsy shows that the lump is non-cancerous (benign), then it may be left alone.However, if the biopsy shows that it is cancerous, the breast cancer treatment protocols will be modified for the expectant woman. Staging* has to be conducted to find out if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, but only with liver ultrasound and chest X-ray. Depending on which trimester of the pregnancy she is in, the breast surgeon, oncologist and the ob-gyn will discuss what is best for the patient and her baby.Chemotherapy may be administered from the second trimester onwards, followed by surgery after she deliver the baby. As such management of the patient’s treatment is complex, it will involve good multidisciplinary care by experienced doctors.*Staging is a way to describe where the cancer is located, how much the cancer has grown, and if or where it has spread.

Breast Lumps During Pregnancy: What to Expect and Do

“It all started with a persistent pain in the left breast, and I was referred by my General Practitioner for a mammogram and ultrasound. Both the mammogram and ultrasound results showed an abnormal lump, and I was further scheduled for a breast biopsy to determine if the lump was benign or malignant. Questions started to fill my mind. What is breast biopsy and how is it performed? And is it painful?”For many patients, pain is a very common symptom and is the most common complaint that brings them to see a doctor. For a small group, there happens to be an abnormal lump found that needs a biopsy. Most times, pain is not a sign of cancer, and any lumps found may not be the cause of the breast pain you experienced.Some of us may face a similar situation when a lump is detected. It is normal to have many questions. This article aims to address some of your preliminary questions while you arrange for a consult with a professional specialist. It is important to seek timely professional diagnosis and treatment.Here’s what you need to know about a breast biopsy and what to expect.<h2>What is a breast biopsy?</h2>A breast biopsy is a process where a small sample of breast tissue is removed through a special biopsy needle. The tissue samples removed from the breast lump will be further examined under a microscope. Typically, the breast biopsy is performed if there is an abnormality detected from your previous mammograms or breast ultrasounds. The goal of the biopsy is to determine what the abnormality is and the best treatment to move forward with.Although ultrasounds and mammograms are useful ways to identify breast lumps, a breast biopsy is the <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/breast-biopsy/about/pac-20384812" target="_self">only way to confirm</a> what the lump is. You may also want to have a designated driver or someone to accompany you home safely.<h2>What are the different types of breast biopsies and how are they performed?</h2>Once your breast surgeon decides that a biopsy is needed, they will determine the best type of biopsy for your situation. There are a few breast biopsy procedures to obtain samples of a patient’s breast lumps. Your breast surgeon will recommend based on the location, size, and other characteristics of the breast abnormality.Your breast surgeon will take a tissue sample either through a minimally invasive biopsy procedure or surgery. Minimally invasive procedures are ideal because they offer:<ul><li>Less pain</li><li>Less scarring</li><li>Faster recovery time</li><li>Lower risk of infection</li><li>Lower hospital costs</li><li>Able to return to usual activities quickly</li></ul><h3>Ultrasound-guided breast biopsy</h3>This procedure is performed through ultrasound guidance. An ultrasound is a method that utilises high-frequency sound waves to generate precise images.The breast surgeon will locate the lump within the patient’s breasts using the breast ultrasound device before a small incision is made for the biopsy needle to retrieve tissue samples. With an ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, the breast surgeon can identify <a href="https://www.radiologyinfo.org/en/info/breastbius" target="_self">lumps near the chest wall or under the arms</a>.It can be used in conjunction with <a href="https://www.radiologyinfo.org/en/info/breastbius" target="_self">vacuum-assisted core biopsy, core needle biopsy, or fine needle aspiration biopsy</a>. This ultrasound-guided breast biopsy procedure is also more cost-effective than other methods like open surgical biopsy.<h3>Stereotactic biopsy</h3><img src="https://images.contentstack.io/v3/assets/blt5f400315f9e4f0b3/bltdc27a561fa0c5072/6545217008cc0104077ce311/Stereotactic_Biopsy.jpeg?branch=uat_release_3" height="auto"/>With a stereotactic biopsy, a 3D image of the breast is created from the mammogram results. The doctor uses the image to pinpoint the exact location of the suspected breast lump and guides the needle there.The patient will lay <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/breast-biopsy-stereotactic#procedure" target="_self">facing down on a padded biopsy table</a> with one of the breasts positioned in the hole in the table. The patient’s breast will be compressed with two plates while the biopsy site is located using a targeted mammogram.
