Get to know more about the expert

Dr Chong Choon Seng is a Senior Consultant specialising in Colorectal Surgery and a Medical Director at Ark Surgical Practice in Mt Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore. He is also an Associate Professor in Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS). His main expertise lies in the field of colorectal surgery namely colorectal cancer, piles surgery, anal fistula treatment, colonoscopy, endoscopic submucosal dissection, and colonic stenting.

Before going to private practice, Dr Chong was a Consultant Surgeon at National University Hospital (NUH) and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. He has 20 years of experience and is an established laparoscopic and robotic colorectal surgeon. He has performed numerous complex colorectal cancer operations and is recognised as a regional speaker and trainer for minimally invasive colorectal surgeons around the Asia Pacific region.

Being trained in Samsung Medical Centre in Korea for his fellowship in 2015, he has performed robotic and advanced laparoscopic surgeries under the guidance of experts in the field. Some of the procedures that he is well known for include

  • transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS),
  • laparoscopic Complete Mesocolon Excision (CME),
  • transanal Total Mesorectum Excision (TME),
  • transanal TME (taTME) and
  • Endoscopic Submucosal Dissections (ESD).

TAMIS is useful for benign and early malignant disease and it leads to higher rates of rectal preservation. Laparoscopic CME and TME are performed routinely for colon cancer and lead to lower recurrence rates. Having published their local favourable taTME results under the Open access - British Journal Surgery, this technique continues to be a good alternative for challenging rectal cancer surgeries. To date, Dr Chong continues to proctor such cases for surgeons in other institutions.

Dr Chong is an international thought leader due to his clinical and research work in the field. He has over 100 publications and won multiple awards in teaching and research.

Dr Chong is accredited to perform surgical procedures at Thomson Medical Centre and Mt Elizabeth Hospital.
