Dr Tan graduated from Guy's, King's, and St Thomas's College of Medicine in London, UK. She completed her general surgery and surgical oncology training at Singapore General Hospital and the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS). Furthering her subspecialty training, she trained in CRS and HIPEC at the NHS Peritoneal Malignancy Unit in Basingstoke, UK, and Pelvic Oncology Surgery at King Chulalongkorn Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand.

Before her current role, Dr Tan trained extensively at leading institutions. The Basingstoke Peritoneal Malignancy Unit is renowned for treating peritoneal malignancies and has performed over 1,200 CRS and HIPEC procedures. King Chulalongkorn Hospital is a major referral centre in Thailand, known for managing advanced pelvic cancers.

Dr Tan is an active member of the medical community, serving on the executive committee of the Asian Peritoneal Surface Malignancy Group and the Gastrointestinal and Sarcoma Clinical Trial Steering Committee. She is also an examiner for Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and the National University of Singapore's School of Medicine and a speaker in the foundation course in clinical oncology at NCCS.

Dr Tan has received multiple awards, including the RISE award for outstanding faculty in 2014, the 2017 Editor's Award from the International Journal of Hyperthermia, and the Singapore Health Quality Service Gold Award in 2019, recognising her exceptional contributions to medicine.
