Dr James Tan Wen Tien is an anaesthesiologist at Novena Pain Management Centre. He has been practising medicine for over 25 years and was the first doctor in Singapore to use cooled radiofrequency for pain treatment. Dr Tan has extensive experience and special interests in pain management, obstetric anaesthesia, and regional anaesthesia.

Dr Tan's primary specialities include pain management and anaesthesia for obstetric and regional procedures. He is particularly known for his expertise in managing chronic and cancer pain and advanced interventional procedures for refractory pain.

Dr Tan graduated from University College London with a medical degree. Upon returning to Singapore, he trained in anaesthesia, obtaining his Master’s degree followed by specialist accreditation. He is a fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthesia (FANZCA) and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS).

Dr Tan has a rich professional history, having served as the head of the division of pain management and senior consultant in the department of anaesthesia at the National University Hospital (NUH). He is currently a visiting senior consultant at NUH.

Dr Tan is committed to medical education and has initiated a pain management fellowship training programme accredited by the Singapore Medical Council. He is an assistant professor at the National University of Singapore’s Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, where he lectures and examines various anaesthesia courses. Additionally, he has been an active participant in scientific meetings and symposiums globally and has served as an expert instructor in advanced procedures.

He was a council member of the Pain Association of Singapore (PAS) and contributed to the publication of recommendations for opioid use in chronic non-cancer pain. Dr Tan has been recognised for his contributions to the field with NUH’s Long Service Award.

Dr James Tan Wen Tien is accredited to perform anaesthetic procedures at Thomson Medical Centre, Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, and Gleneagles Hospital.
