Dr Tan Puay Hoon

Dr Tan Puay Hoon is a Senior Consultant Pathologist and Chairman of the Division of Pathology at Outram and practises at Luma Medical Centre in Novena and Orchard. She is also an Academic Chair of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Pathology Academic Clinical Programme and a Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School and the Department of Anatomy at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS.

Dr Tan has active interests in breast, urologic, and renal pathology. Her clinical practice includes subspecialty surgical signouts, with a focus on the diagnosis and classification of complex pathological conditions. She was a Volume Editor of the 2012 WHO Classification of Tumours of the Breast and is actively involved in translational studies of breast and prostate cancer.

Dr Tan graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Singapore. She furthered her education with an MD and obtained fellowships from the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA), the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS), and the Royal College of Pathologists in the United Kingdom (FRCPath).

Dr Tan has held numerous prestigious positions, including Senior Consultant and Chairman of the Division of Pathology at Singapore General Hospital. She has contributed significantly to the field of pathology through her research, clinical work, and leadership roles.

Dr Tan is a prominent figure in the academic and medical community. She serves on the Editorial Boards of several prestigious journals, including Modern Pathology, Breast Cancer Research, and the Journal of Clinical Pathology. She is an Associate Editor of Histopathology and the Singapore Medical Journal. Her research interests focus on the classification and molecular pathogenesis of breast fibroepithelial lesions, triple-negative breast cancers, and ductal carcinoma in situ. In urologic pathology, she studies prostate and renal cancer and contributed to the 2016 WHO Classification of Tumours of the Urinary System and Male Genital Organs. Professor Tan has authored over 400 publications and regularly participates in regional and international conferences. She is the immediate Past-President of the International Society of Breast Pathology and served as Councillor for Asia of the International Society of Urological Pathology from 2009 to 2015.
