Understanding Eczema
Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by symptoms such as itching, redness, and inflammation. In TCM, eczema is viewed as a result of imbalances in the body's Qi (vital energy) and blood circulation. These imbalances can arise from various factors such as internal organ dysfunction, external pathogens, emotional stress, and dietary habits. With a rich history spanning more than 2,500 years, TCM employs various therapeutic methods to restore and maintain balance in the body, effectively addressing skin conditions like eczema.
TCM Approach to Eczema
According to TCM, eczema is often associated with a specific body constitution termed Wind-Dampness-Heat. Those with this constitution tend to consume excessively spicy, oily foods, weakening their Spleen and Stomach – organs crucial for digestion.
When these organs struggle to convert our food and drinks into nourishment, Dampness-Heat can accumulate. External Wind interacting with internal Dampness-Heat then triggers itchy skin rashes. Furthermore, emotions also play a significant role in skin health by influencing the function and balance of specific organs. For instance, excessive worry or anger can elevate body heat, while stress may lead to Qi stagnation. These imbalances can appear as symptoms like hives, rashes, or redness.
