What is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition characterised by pain and inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue running across the bottom of the foot connecting the heel bone to the toes. The pain is typically sharp and is felt most acutely with the first steps in the morning or after periods of inactivity. Contributing factors include overuse, repetitive stress, improper footwear, flat feet, high arches, and being overweight.
TCM Perspective
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, plantar fasciitis is viewed as a result of imbalances and blockages in the body’s Qi (vital energy) and blood circulation, particularly affecting the meridians that traverse the foot. Key aspects include:
- Qi and Blood Stagnation: TCM considers pain to be a sign of stagnation, where the flow of Qi and blood is obstructed. This blockage in the foot meridians leads to pain and inflammation.
- Damp-Heat Accumulation: The condition can also arise from the accumulation of dampness and heat in the body, which can settle in the foot, causing swelling, redness, and pain.
- Kidney and Liver Imbalance: The Kidney and Liver meridians are closely related to the lower extremities. An imbalance in these organ systems can weaken the tendons and ligaments of the foot, leading to plantar fasciitis.
TCM Treatments
By addressing underlying imbalances in the body's energy, or Qi, and promoting overall health through acupuncture and therapeutic techniques like moxibustion, cupping and herbal foot baths, TCM provides effective and natural pain relief.
