TCM Stroke

Stroke, often referred to as a "brain attack," occurs when blood flow to the brain is disrupted, leading to the deprivation of oxygen and nutrients to brain cells. This can result in brain damage and a range of neurological impairments depending on the severity and location of the stroke.

Common consequences include paralysis, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, cognitive deficits, and challenges with daily activities.

Causes of Stroke

In TCM, stroke is often attributed to a combination of factors that disrupt the flow of Qi (vital energy) and blood in the body. These factors include Wind, Dampness, and Blood Stasis, each contributing to the development of stroke in different ways:

TCM Treatment Methods

TCM views stroke as a complex interplay of these factors, with Wind contributing to the sudden onset of symptoms, Dampness hindering circulation and promoting systemic inflammation, and Blood Stasis causing ischemic damage and clot formation. By addressing these underlying imbalances and promoting the smooth flow of Qi and Blood, TCM therapies aim to prevent and manage stroke, support recovery, and reduce the risk of recurrence.

Herbal Medicine

  • TCM herbal formulas are tailored to individual needs and can support recovery by nourishing Qi and blood, promoting circulation, and reducing inflammation.
  • Herbal remedies may also address specific symptoms such as speech difficulties, cognitive impairment, or emotional disturbances following a stroke.

Acupuncture

  • Reducing muscle spasticity and pain
  • Improving motor function and recovery of limb movement
  • Enhancing overall neurological function
  • Alleviating post-stroke depression and anxiety

Golden period for recovery

  • TCM treatment can commence when the patient is discharged from the hospital.
  • The golden period for recovery is within the first six months of the stroke.
  • A minimum of 2 treatments per week is recommended.
  • During the TCM treatment period, patients may continue with physiotherapy if needed.
