Dr Chok Aik Yong is a General and Colorectal Surgeon and is currently the medical director of the Aelius Surgical Centre in Orchard. He focuses on general and colorectal surgery with particular expertise in the management of colorectal disease, colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
His services include minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic colorectal surgery, diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy, and the surgical treatment of haemorrhoids, perianal abscesses and anal fistulae. He also manages surgical conditions such as hernia and bowel disease and provides emergency surgical treatment for conditions such as obstructed colorectal cancer, intussusception and bowel perforation.
Dr Chok received his medical degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2008. He subsequently became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2010, completed his specialist training in general surgery at NUS in 2016, and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, in 2017.
Prior to his current role, Dr Chok was a consultant surgeon in the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Singapore General Hospital (SGH), where he managed complex colorectal cases. He was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) Award to further his subspeciality expertise in the surgical management of colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.
During his time at SGH, he was part of the multidisciplinary IBD team, the pelvic exenteration team performing multi-organ surgery for colorectal cancer and the colorectal genetics and inherited disorders service.
Dr Chok has contributed to medical research and education and has authored and co-authored more than 40 scientific publications in peer-reviewed medical journals, including the British Journal of Surgery and the International Journal of Colorectal Disease.
He's a Clinical Assistant Professor at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and has received teaching awards, including the NUS Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence. He has performed more than 500 major colorectal operations and is a member of the international PelvEx Collaborative. His work has been recognised by the Singapore Health Service Quality Awards.
Dr Chok is accredited to perform surgery at the Thomson Medical Centre.
