Dr Ho Choon Kiat is a general surgeon practising Thomson Medical Centre. Dr Ho specialises in the treatment of liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile duct cancers, as well as benign hepatobiliary diseases like gallstone, bile duct stone, pancreatitis, cystic tumours of the pancreas and neuroendocrine cancer.A surgeon with 20 years experience in the field, Dr Ho's other clinical interests include digestive tract surgery, cancer surgery, laparoscopic hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, hernia surgery, endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy).Dr Ho graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Singapore in 1994. After his National Service, he trained in general surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital under Professor Low Cheng Hock. He was admitted as a Fellow to the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Glasgow in 1999.In 2003, through the Health Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) award, he undertook subspecialty training in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at the Surgical Klinik of the University of Heidelberg, Germany. Under the mentorship of Professor Marcus Bachler and Helmut Friess, two of the best published pancreatic surgeons, Dr Ho was trained in management of pancreatic cancer as well as cancer surgery in general.In 2004, Dr Ho was awarded the TTSH Scholarship and received formal training in advanced laparoscopic surgery at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital under the mentorship of Drs Les Nathanson and Nick O'Rourke. Following his return, he started the advanced laparoscopic service which provides laparoscopic liver, pancreas and bile duct surgery.Prior to establishing his private practise, Dr Ho was a consultant at the Department of Surgery, Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He also served as the Director of Endoscopy Centre. Dr Ho served in the Ex-Co of the Chapter of General Surgeons, College of Surgeons, from 2011 to 2017. He is a founding member of the Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Association of Singapore.Dr Ho has authored many publications and book chapters. His key publications involve laparoscopic surgery and management of hepatobiliary and pancreatic conditions. Dr Ho was also invited to write a book chapter titled "Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple operation), Distal Pancreatectomy, Segmental Pancreatectomy, Total Pancreatectomy and Transduodenal Resection of the Papilla of Vater". This was published in Dr Leslie "Blumgart's Surgery of the Liver, Biliary Tract and Pancreas 4th Edition"Dr Ho's other passion is in surgical education. He is an adjunct assistant professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS. Dr Ho Choon Kiat

Dr Jacqueline Tan is a Hand Surgeon at Thomson Surgical Centre. She has expertise in reconstruction of brachial plexus injuries, open and endoscopic peripheral nerve surgeries, and microsurgical reconstruction of the upper limb. She also has special interests in hand and wrist fractures, arthritis of the hand and wrist, wrist arthroscopy, and ligament reconstruction for wrist instability.Dr. Tan completed her hand surgical training in Singapore and was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan scholarship by the Ministry of Health for fellowship in 2010, specializing in brachial plexus surgery and advanced microsurgery. She is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, UK, and a fellow of the Academy of Medicine in hand surgery. She was the former Head of Department and Senior Consultant of Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery at Singapore General Hospital (SGH). She also served as the director of micro-reconstruction service and director of peripheral nerve and paralytic upper limb service at SGH.Dr. Tan was the Deputy Vice-Chair for Education in the Musculoskeletal Sciences Academic Clinical Program at SingHealth. She was also the Program Director for the SingHealth Hand Surgery Program and Core Faculty for the SingHealth Orthopaedic Surgery Program. She is currently a member of the Residency Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Health, which oversees the training of hand surgery residents in Singapore.Dr. Tan taught in medical schools and has held concurrent teaching appointments as Adjunct Assistant Professor with Duke-NUS Medical School and Adjunct Assistant Professor with Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. Apart from her teaching commitments, Dr. Tan was also the President of the Singapore Society for Hand Surgery, Vice-chairman of the Chapter of Hand Surgeons, the College of Surgeons, Singapore, and is still the Secretary of the Singapore Reconstructive Microsurgery Society. She is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the Asia Pacific Wrist Association, and will be the upcoming Chairperson for the Asian Pacific Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand, 2023.Dr. Tan has been publishing widely in peer-reviewed journals on hand surgery. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the Singapore Health Quality Service Award, Outstanding Faculty Award &amp; Faculty Appreciation Award for SingHealth Residency, and Orthopaedic Teaching Excellence Award.

Dr Tan Siau Woon Jacqueline

Dr Lee Hanjing is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon. Her main clinical interest includes paediatric plastic surgery, craniofacial surgery for facial fractures, breast reconstructive surgery as well as cosmetic surgery including procedures like blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, breast augmentation, fat grafting, liposuction, abdominoplasty, and mummy makeover.After graduating from the Guys Kings and St. Thomas School of Medicine in the University of London, she completed her postgraduate training at the National University Hospital (NUH) in 2016. To further her training in cosmetic surgery, she completed a fellowship at the East Sydney Private Hospital under various renowned plastic surgeons specialised in breasts and body contouring.Dr Lee had been serving as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon and is currently a Visiting Consultant at NUH.Dr Lee also holds the appointment of Asst Professor in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine Singapore in Plastic Surgery, and also a member of the Singapore Association of Plastic Surgeons.Dr Lee is a strong believer in giving back to the society. Since 2010, she has been volunteering to provide corrective surgery to children with cleft lip, palate/ear deformities, and other conditions in developing countries like Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

Dr Lee Hanjing

Dr Lee graduated in 1992 from the National University of Singapore, and went on to complete specialist training, receiving specialist accreditation board certification in Urology in 2003. In 2016, he was conferred the Master of Public Health degree, under the Dean’s Scholarship from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and NHG Clinician-Administrator Award. Dr Lee was previously Director of Endo-urology at TTSH, Program Director for Surgery-in-General, and Urology residency programs in NHG, and also held the positions of Associate Professor and Principal Lead for Urology in the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, prior to entering private practice in 2021. He attends to patients with a wide range of general urological conditions, and specialises in urinary stones disease, endourology and advanced laparoscopic surgery. He is visiting consultant to Dover Park Hospice, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. Dr Lee has served on various committees at hospital, cluster and ministry level, and presently serves on the Singapore Medical Council as an elected member, and as a council member of the Singapore Medical Association.

Dr Lee Yee Mun

Dr Lim Khong Hee graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1992. He obtained his postgraduate degree in 1998 and was a Clinical Fellow (HMDP) in Upper Gastrointestinal and Laparoscopic Surgery at the renowned Princess Alexandra Hospital (Brisbane) in 2002.Prior to establishing his private practice, Dr Lim was the Chief of the Upper Gastrointestinal Service and Senior Consultant in the Department of General Surgery, Tan Tock Seng Hospital. During his tenure as the Director of the Centre for Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery in Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Dr Lim encouraged the development of complex laparoscopic skills and techniques as well as organised basic, advanced and masterclass laparoscopic courses.Dr Lim performs upper gastrointestinal and laparoscopic procedures such as radical gastric resections with systematic lymphadenectomy, laparoscopic fundoplication, and laparoscopic surgery for severe obesity. He is competent in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.Dr Lim is actively involved in the teaching of medical students. He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and an Examiner in the Final Professional Examination for the Degrees of M.B.B.S. He has been an invited Speaker and Chairpersons for numerous local and regional meetings.He is also a member of the Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA), the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and the Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society of Singapore (OMSSS).

Dr Lim Khong Hee

Dr. Nidhu received her M.B, B.S from Delhi University in 2007. Pursuing her passion for surgery, she went on to complete her Masters in General Surgery from Singapore, along with the prestigious Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (MRCS) in 2011.She had displayed a keen interest in pursuing Paediatric Surgery since her formative years as a surgeon. She trained at National University Hospital, Singapore, and obtained her specialist certification in Paediatric Surgery in 2016.Her special interest is in the field of laparoscopy, for which she obtained fellowships in laparoscopy from World Laparoscopy Hospital, India, and has been a lifetime member of the World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons since 2016. She also has successfully completed a fellowship in Laparoscopy from National University Hospital, Singapore.Dr. Nidhu went on to further her experience in Cambridge University Hospital (Addenbrookes), where she underwent intense training in paediatric surgery for 2 years as a Senior Clinical Fellow. During her stay in the UK, she was awarded two British Association of Paediatric Surgeons (BAPES) scholarships in the field of Laparoscopy by Karl Storz London in 2018.She has a keen interest in furthering her knowledge in the field of Paediatric Surgery and is also a fellow of European Board of Paediatric Surgeons since December 2018.Dr. Nidhu believes in returning to the community and has held seminars to create awareness since medical school years. Dr Nidhu Jasm

Dr. Sim Hsien Lin is a General Surgeon (Colorectal) at Thomson Surgical Centre. She graduated from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2002, before further obtaining her Master of Medicine (Surgery) in 2007. Upon completion of her specialisation in General Surgery, she became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in 2011, winning the Gold Medal award at the FRCS Exit Examination that year. In 2013, she received further subspecialty training at St Mark's Hospital in London. Dr. Sim has a special interest in laparoscopic colorectal surgery and transanal endoscopic microsurgery. In addition, she is trained in the surgical management of inflammatory bowel diseases and complex anal fistulas. Still active in both undergraduate and postgraduate education, Dr. Sim is an Adjunct Assistant Professor with the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and also an Adjunct Lecturer with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. She is an active member of the Singapore Colorectal Society and Singapore Cancer Society. She has a few publications in general surgery in both local and international peer-accredited journals, and has presented her research papers in various conferences in Singapore and overseas. She was also active in conducting clinical trials pertaining to the field of colorectal diseases and had previously published a book chapter on hemorrhoids. Prior to joining private practice, Dr. Sim was a senior consultant at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, a visiting consultant at Admiralty Medical Centre and an Associate Program Director with the National Healthcare Group (NHG) Residency Programme. She actively participates in public education and had organised numerous public forums and given many community public talks during her time at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. Dr. Sim is a caring, dedicated and passionate surgeon who aspires to provide the best care and service to her patients. She was the Service Lead of Geriatric Surgical Service and firmly believes that transdisciplinary care is the key to supporting both the elderly and complex patients through their perioperative and recovery journey. Dr. Sim is able to converse fluently in English and Chinese (Mandarin, Hokkien and Teochew).

Dr Stephen Chang is a general surgeon and subspecializes in laparoscopic surgery, management of gall bladder, liver, pancreatic and digestive diseases as well as abdominal wall hernia conditions.Dr Stephen Chang graduated with MBBS at NUS in 1994 and obtained his Master of Medicine (Surgery) in 2000. Having become a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK in 2003, he furthered his training in laparoscopic hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, and liver transplantation in Paris, France in 2004.Dr Chang pioneered the single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) in Singapore and was the first few to publish his experience in single incision laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, liver resection and pancreas resection in the world.He has published widely in this 'scarless' laparoscopic approach, proving that it is safe and reduces pain. It is the technique of choice for almost all of his gallbladder and appendix surgeries.He is an Adjunct Associate Professor in NUS and has more than 100 publications in both clinical and Medtech research and has since filed patents in these areas.Dr Chang is the founding president of the Hepatopancreatobiliary Association of Singapore. During his 4-year tour as president, he spear-headed the Liver Disease Awareness Week to improve awareness of liver diseases among Singaporeans.

Breast lumps during pregnancy are very common. The expectant mother will experience many normal physiological changes ― an increase in breast size, more obvious sweat glands around the nipples, a darkening of the areola ― all of which will prepare her body for breastfeeding.Common non-cancerous variations to breasts include hormonal changes (fibrocystic changes), fibroadenomas, cysts, lipomas, accessory (extra) breast tissue. Pregnancy-related breast cancers make up about 3 per cent of all breast cancers.Whenever a pregnant woman feels a lump, she should see a doctor to get their opinion, keeping in mind that most times it will turn out to be nothing serious!<h2>What the doctor will do</h2>When you see the doctor, she will ask details as to how you detected the lump, how long it has been present and if you have detected any changes, so as to get an idea what the lump is likely to be.Next, the doctor will conduct a breast examination to confirm the presence of the lump, and check for any other symptoms such as skin changes or nipple discharge.Most patients will then be recommended to get an ultrasound scan ― this will give additional information as to whether this lump is benign or cancerous. If there is any concern that the lump may be cancerous, your doctor will advise you as to the pros and cons of having a biopsy, which can be done safely even during pregnancy.“If a pregnant women detects a lump, I would advise them to have a thorough consultation and a physical examination, followed by an ultrasound. If necessary, I would then perform a biopsy.”<h2>Breast cancer screening during pregnancy</h2>A screening checks for cancer even when a patient is feeling well and has absolutely no cancer signs or symptoms. For breast cancer screening, most countries, including Singapore, recommend mammogram screening from age 50 onwards. For women who are at higher risk, this may start at 40. Some specialists will recommend a supplementary ultrasound as well.If a pregnant women detects a lump, I would advise them to have a thorough consultation and a physical examination, followed by an ultrasound. If necessary, I would then perform a biopsy.<h2>Screening methods (Mammograms/Ultrasound)</h2>Ultrasound, the same technology used to monitor the baby during pregnancy, is safe and useful in detecting lumps, and to check if it’s solid or cystic. For a small group, there happens to be an abnormal lump found that needs a biopsy. Most times, pain is not a sign of cancer, and any lumps found may not be the cause of the breast pain you experienced.Some of us may face a similar situation when a lump is detected. Everything You Need to Know About Breast Biopsy

Just as there are skin issues that arise during pregnancy, skin conditions can also develop after you give birth. Fortunately, they are largely treatable, so there is no need to fret – your postpartum skin and hair will bounce back in no time. We take a look at some of the most common conditions.<h2>Melasma</h2>Also known as “the mask of pregnancy”, this pigmentation condition is due to increased melanin production and is caused by a combination of genetic and hormonal factors, as well as sun exposure. It tends to affect Asian skin more, appearing as brownish patches over the cheeks, forehead, temples, nasal bridge, upper lips and jawline.It is best controlled by avoiding the sun and with regular use of sunscreen, lightening creams and topical agents, although it can persist in some cases. Other treatments include chemical peeling, intense pulsed light therapy and certain forms of laser therapy. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding – certain ingredients such as tretinoin and hydroquinone that can be found in some skincare products should be avoided by breastfeeding mums.<h2>Dermatitis/eczema</h2>Eczema or dermatitis is a relatively common yet noninfectious condition, so it will not spread to your baby. Often it is an aggravation of an underlying sensitive skin condition that has been present for some time. For new mothers, it can also develop as a result of excessive water contact due to frequent handwashing.Use moisturiser regularly to soothe inflamed and itchy skin. Topical steroid creams are prescribed to calm inflamed skin and are safe to use even when breastfeeding. Use a gentle soap substitute and continue to moisturise even after the skin rash has settled.<h2>Stretchmarks</h2>Affecting at least 90 percent of pregnant women, stretchmarks are a form of scarring that appear red when fresh, but most will fade to white after delivery. During pregnancy, intensive use of moisturisers may help the condition, and there are specially formulated stretchmark creams on the market that you can continue using after delivery. For more severe cases, dermatologists may prescribe tretinoin cream to use postpartum when you are not breastfeeding. Some skin-tightening laser treatments are safe options to remove stretchmarks even if you are breastfeeding, but these usually require multiple sessions.<h2>Telogen effluvium</h2>This condition results in hair fall that usually occurs about three months after delivery. Though increased hair fall can be distressing to new mothers, it is almost always a self-limiting condition, and you will usually recover within six months. If you notice increased hair fall, consult a doctor to exclude other causes of hair loss (such as low iron levels). Topical medications can be used if you are not breastfeeding.<h2>Acne</h2>Caused by an inflammation in the facial oil glands, acne may be aggravated by hormonal changes. Most of the time, acne clears within a few weeks or months, but medical treatment should be sought to prevent the risk of scarring. There are many topical agents that can be safely used even when breastfeeding. In more severe cases, oral medications such as antibiotics may be required.
