What is Acne
Acne is a common skin condition that affects individuals of all ages, characterised by pimples, blackheads, and cysts primarily on the face, back, and chest. It occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, often leading to inflammation, redness, and sometimes scarring. Factors such as hormonal changes, stress, diet, and genetics can contribute to acne development.
TCM Perspective
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acne is viewed as a manifestation of internal imbalances and disruptions in the flow of Qi (vital energy) and blood. The skin is considered a mirror reflection of your internal health, meaning that issues within the body can manifest as skin problems. TCM identifies several potential causes for acne:
- Heat and Dampness: Excess heat and dampness in the body can rise to the skin's surface, causing inflammation and pimples.
- Qi Stagnation: Stress and emotional factors can cause Qi stagnation, leading to breakouts and inflammation.
- Poor Gut Health: An unhealthy digestive system can contribute to the development of acne, as toxins and imbalances in the gut are reflected on the skin.
TCM Treatments
TCM offers a holistic approach to treating acne by addressing the root causes of skin imbalances. TCM modalities such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, and facial acupuncture work synergistically to regulate Qi and blood, clear heat and dampness, and improve overall skin health. These treatments not only target the symptoms but also promote long-term healing and prevention of future breakouts.
