What is Back & Knee Pain?

Back pain is a common musculoskeletal condition that can result from various factors such as muscle strain, ligament sprains, disc herniation, arthritis, or spinal abnormalities.

Knee pain can arise from injuries (like ligament tears or meniscus damage), overuse, arthritis, or degenerative conditions.

TCM Perspective

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), back pain and knee pain are seen as manifestations of imbalances in the body's Qi (vital energy) and blood circulation, meridian blockages, and disharmonies in organ systems.

  • Meridian Blockages: TCM views back pain as disruptions in the flow of Qi and blood along the Bladder and Kidney meridians, which run through the lower back. Blockages or stagnation in these meridians can lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.
  • Kidney Deficiency: Chronic back pain may be linked to Kidney Qi or Yin deficiency, affecting the lumbar region and causing weakness, fatigue, and susceptibility to injury.
  • Dampness and Phlegm Accumulation: Cold-dampness or damp-heat pathologies can accumulate in the knee joint, causing inflammation, heaviness, and restricted movement.
  • Deficient Qi and Blood: Weakness in Qi and blood circulation can lead to inadequate nourishment of the knee.
