Sports Injury & Chinese Medicine
Sports injuries are common among athletes and active individuals, significantly impacting one’s ability to perform and enjoy physical activities. Two prevalent types of sports injuries are muscle strains and sprained ankles.
Muscle Strain and Sprained Ankle
Muscle strains and sprained ankles occur when muscle fibers or ligaments are overstretched or torn, often due to overuse, improper use, or a sudden increase in physical activity. Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and limited range of motion.
TCM Perspective
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), muscle strains and sprained ankles are viewed as disruptions in the flow of Qi (vital energy) and blood within the meridians, particularly those running through the affected areas. These injuries can be associated with:
Qi and Blood Stagnation: The injury causes a blockage, leading to pain and swelling.
Liver and Spleen Imbalance: The Liver controls the tendons and the Spleen governs the muscles. An imbalance in these organs can make muscles and ligaments more susceptible to injury.
External Pathogenic Factors: Exposure to external factors like wind, cold, and dampness can exacerbate injuries by causing further stagnation and pain.
TCM Treatments
TCM offers effective treatments for sports injuries, utilising acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping therapy. These modalities work synergistically to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and promote faster recovery, helping athletes get back to their peak performance.
