What are Hives?
Hives, also known as urticaria, are a common skin condition characterised by itchy, raised, red or skin-coloured welts that appear on the skin. These welts can vary in size and may appear and fade repeatedly as the reaction runs its course. Hives can be triggered by a variety of factors including allergies, stress, infections, and certain medications. Symptoms often include itching, swelling, and discomfort.
TCM Perspective
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), hives are seen as an imbalance in the body’s Qi (vital energy) and blood, often due to external pathogenic factors or internal imbalances. TCM identifies several potential causes for hives:
- Wind-Heat or Wind-Cold Invasion: External factors such as wind, heat, or cold can penetrate the body’s defenses, leading to skin reactions like hives.
- Qi and Blood Stagnation: Poor circulation of Qi and blood can cause stasis, resulting in skin eruptions.
- Wind Heat or Blood Heat: Excessive heat in the blood or due to wind can cause symptoms like redness, itching, and swelling.
TCM Treatments
TCM provides effective treatment modalities for hives by addressing internal imbalances and promoting overall skin health. Acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary adjustments are key components of TCM therapy for hives. These modalities work together to regulate Qi and blood, clear heat and dampness, and enhance detoxification processes in the body.
