Dr Tan Yia Swam is a consultant general surgeon at Breast Friend Surgery & Wellness in Thomson with a subspecialisation in breast surgery. She leads an all-female team at Breast Friend Surgery & Wellness, dedicated to providing swift and accurate diagnoses and comprehensive care for patients with breast-related concerns. Dr Tan believes in a holistic approach to wellness that encompasses not just physical, but also mental, emotional, and spiritual health.

Dr Tan specialises in minimally invasive breast surgery, ultrasound-guided biopsy of breast lumps, aspiration of breastfeeding abscesses, and surgery for breast cancer. Her expertise includes breast conservation surgery, skin-sparing and nipple-sparing mastectomy, and sentinel lymph node biopsy. She is highly experienced in managing a wide range of breast conditions, such as lumps, pain, nipple discharge, cancers, and abnormal imaging results.

Dr Tan obtained her medical degree from the National University of Singapore. She pursued her surgical training at Singapore General Hospital, National University Hospital, and Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Dr Tan furthered her qualifications with a Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) from Edinburgh and a Master of Medicine (Surgery) degree. She is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore (FAMS).

Prior to establishing her private practice, Dr Tan was a consultant in the Department of Breast Surgery at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Throughout her career, she has been recognised for her patient-centric care, receiving accolades such as the KK “Service from the Heart Award” in 2016 and the Gold Award in the “Singapore Health Quality Service” in 2018.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr Tan has held several significant leadership roles. She was the first female President of the Singapore Medical Association (SMA) Council from 2020 to 2022 and served as a Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) from 2021 to 2023. Dr Tan is also a member of the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) for the 2022-2025 term.

Dr Tan is an active contributor to medical research, with publications in prominent journals both locally and internationally. Her commitment to education has been recognised with the “Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence.” She is also involved in public outreach through educational talks to the community, healthcare professionals, and students.

Dr Tan is accredited to perform surgical procedures at Thomson Medical Centre and Mount Alvernia Hospital.
